Structured Relationships

Hierarchy For those of you who have met me face to face, I may have handed you my business card. The picture beside will you remind you of the back of it. These cards were designed by Hugh McLeod. There are a few others on his list that I would like to carry with me but I lack the guts to hand them out.

I chose this card to represent some of what I do. I work with companies and look at them as a community of relationships that outframe any drawn hierarchy. Over the past several years I have worked with individuals to help give them a voice within the structure of their organization. In more recent days I have come to realize that giving individuals a voice can lead them to some more kick-back from "above". I am more convinced than ever that there is a need to work with the structures and systems to open up and value relationships more. If we were every able to draw how companies actually functioned they would look more like a mind map of interrelated conversations in the lunch room. The more companies can encourage cross-functional conversations the better.
